It also expanded into artist services, which Lucchese had been planning well before the pandemic. Sofar Sounds managed to stay afloat through its Listening Room livestreamed concerts, where artists kept 100% of the donations, which averaged around $450. As the pandemic dragged on, Sofar Sounds told the artists to keep the money as a grant and launched a formal grant program for artists. To help these artists, the company sent them a note and offered to pay them the money they typically receive for their shows as an advance. Sofar Sounds had to cancel shows for 3,000 artists. ![]() However, not only did Sofar Sounds survive the pandemic, but it also managed to pay out more than $1.5 million to artists whose scheduled shows were canceled due to lockdown and hosted multiple livestreams.Īccording to CEO Jim Lucchese, the company surveyed artists and found that over 70% of them lost more than half of the money they were making, and more than 90% lost almost all their gigs and didn’t get paid. Many of its shows take place in people’s homes, making it difficult to continue operations during lockdowns. Sofar Sounds, a company known for hosting “secret gigs and intimate concerts” featuring emerging artists, was initially thought to be one of the most vulnerable businesses in the music industry when the pandemic hit. ![]()
